Adiposity indices and clinical opinion

Summary

The comparison of various adiposity indices in children and adolescents shows that there is a great similarity between the indices, and also between their ability to distinguish extreme groups. The adiposity indices used are highly correlated with weight and subscapular skinfold thickness, and are not generally independent of height. Differences in these correlations appear during the period of puberty. Discrimination of obese and nonobese subjects by the indices and by clinical opinion agrees in 65%–75% of instances, with no one index agreeing better than the others.

Der Vergleich verschiedener Adipositas-Indices bei Kindern und Jugendlichen zeigt, daß es eine groß Ähnlichkeit zwischen den Indices gibt und auch zwischen ihrer Eignung, Extremgruppen zu unterscheiden. Die benutzten Adipositas-Indices sind mit Gewicht und subskapularer Hautschichtdicke hochkorreliert und sind generell nicht unabhängig von der Körperhöhe. Unterschiede dieser Korrelationen tauchen während der Pubertät auf. Die Unterscheidung von fetten und nicht-fetten Probanden durch indices und durch klinische Beurteilung stimmt in 65 bis 75% der Fälle überein, wobei keiner der Indices eine bessere Übereinstimmung als andere erreicht.

La comparaison de divers indices d'adiposité chez des enfants et des adolescents, montre qu'il y a une grande similitude des indices, ainsi que de leur aptitude à singulariser les groupes extrêmes. Les indices d'adiposité utilisés sont fortement corrélés au poids et au pli cutané sous scapulaire et ne sont en général pas indépendants de la stature. Des différences apparaissent parmi ces corrélations au cours de la puberté. La discrimination des sujets obèses et non obèses au moyen des indices et par examen clinique, coincide dans 65 à 75% des cas, aucun indice ne paraissant meilleur que les autres à cet effet.
