Age of menarche in Bolivian girls of European and Aymara ancestry

Summary

Median age of menarche was determined in children of European and Aymara ancestry residing in La Paz, Bolivia (3600 m) and in children of European ancestry residing in Santa Cruz, Bolivia (400 m). Median age of menarche in European and Aymara highland natives was younger than reported by previous researchers, thus broadening the range of variation in age of menarche in high-altitude populations. Comparisons between La Paz and Santa Cruz European children suggested that growth and development at high altitudes results in a delay in median age of menarche of about 0·8 years.

Das mediane Menarchealter wurde bestimmt bei Kindern von europäischer und Aymara-Herkunft, die in La Paz, in Bolivien (3.600m) wohnen und bei Kindern von europäische Abstammung in Santa Cruz, Bolivien (400m). Das mediane Alter bei der Menarche war bei Europäern und Aymara des Hochlands niedriger als durch frühere Untersucher berichtet, wodurch die Variationsbreite des Menarchealters in Hochlandbevölkerungen verbreitert wird. Der Vergleich zwischen europäischen Kindern von La Paz und Santa Cruz legt nahe, daß Wachstum und Entwicklung in großer Höhe eine Verzögerung des medianen Menarchealters um etwa 0.8 Jahre verursacht.

L'ăge médian des premières règles a été déterminé chez les enfants d'ascendance européenne et aymara résidant à La Paz en Bolivie (3600m), ainsi que chez les enfants d'ascendance européenne résidant à Santa Cruz en Bolivie (400m). L'ăge médian de la ménarche chez les natifs en altitude europénns et aymaras, est plus précoce que décrit précédemment, augmentant ainsi l'étendue de variation de l'ăge à la ménarche des populations de haute altitude. Des comparaisons entre les enfants européens de La Paz et Santa Cruz, suggèrent que la croissance et le développement en haute altitude, ont pour effet de retarde l'ăge médian de la ménarche d'environ 0.8 ans.
