The Cayapa Indians of Ecuador: a population study of seven protein genetic polymorphisms

Summary

The Cayapa Indians are a population of 3600 individuals living in Ecuador, along the Cayapas River and its tributaries. They are thought to have migrated from the Andes, north of Quito, and settled in the Cayapas area five centuries ago as a consequence of Inca expansion and of the Spanish conquest. In order to study the genetic structure of the Cayapa and their relationships with other native American peoples, and to enquire on the possibility of admixture from nearby Black communities, we have investigated a sample of 139 individuals for seven plasma genetic markers (F13A, F13B, ORM1, AHSG, C6, C7 and APOC2) by isoelectric focusing and immunoblotting. The following gene frequencies have been found: F13A*1 = 0·824, F13A*2 = 0·176; F13B*1 = 0·126, F13B*3 = 0·874; ORM1*1 = 0·554, ORM1*2 = 0·446; AHSG*1 = 0·275, AHSG*2 = 0·725; C6*A = 0·131, C6*B = 0·814, C6*A21 = 0·055; C7*1 = 1·000; APOC2*1 = 1·000. The findings confirm, whenever the comparison was possible, quite a good resemblance of the Cayapa with other Native American populations.

Zusammenfassung

Die Cayapa Indianer sind eine 3600 Individuen zählende Population, die in Ecuador entlang des Cayapa Flusses und seiner Nebenflüsse siedelt. Es wird angenommen, daß sie aus den Anden, nördlich von Quito, in diese Region migriert sind, wo sie sich infolge der Ausbreitung der Inkas und der spanischen Eroberung Südmerikas vor etwa 500 Jahren angesiedelt haben. Um die genetische Struktur der Cayapa sowie ihre Beziehungen zu anderen amerikanischen Ureinwohnern zu analysieren und um die Möglichkeit eines genetischen Einflusses von nahegelegenen Gemeinden mit schwarzen Einwohnern zu untersuchen, wurden an einer Stichprobe von 139 Individuen sieben genetische Marker des Plasmas (F13A, F13B, ORM1, AHSG, C6, C7 and APOC2) mittels isoelektrischer Fokussierung und Immunoblotting bestimmt. Es wurden die folgenden Genfrequenzen beobachtet: F13A*1 = 0·824, F13A*2 = 0·176; F13B*1 = 0·126; F13B*3 = 0·874; ORM1*1 = 0·554, ORM1*2 = 0·446; AHSG*1 = 0·275, AHSG*2 = 0·725; C6*A = 0·131, C6*B = 0·814, C6*A21 = 0·055; C7*1 = 1·000; APOC2*1 = 1·000. Die Ergebnisse belegen, soweit ein Vergleich möglich war, eine relativ große genetische Ähnlichkeit der Cayapa mit anderen eingeborenen Populationen Amerikas.

Les indiens Cayapa forment une population de 3600 individus vivant en Equateur, le long de la rivi`ere Cayapas et de ses affluents. On pense qu'ils auraient pu migrer des Andes, du nord de Quito et qu'ils se seraient établis dans la région de la Cayapas il y a cinq si`ecles, par suite de l'expansion Inca et de la conquˆete espagnole. Afin d'étudier la structure génétique des Cayapa, leurs relations avec d'autres populations aborig`enes d'Amérique et d'étudier l'éventualité de leur métissage avec des communautés noires voisines, on a analysé un échantillon de 139 individus pour sept marqueurs génétiques plasmatiques (F13A, F13B, ORM1, AHSG, C6, C7 et APOC2) par focalisation isoélectrique et par immunoblotting. Les fréquences géniques suivantes ont été trouvées: F13A*1 = 0,824; F13A*2 = 0,176; F13B*1 = 0,126; F13B*3 = 0,874; ORM1*1 = 0,554; ORM1*2 = 0,446; AHSG*1 = 0,275; AHSG*2 = 0,725; C6*A = 0,131; C6*B = 0,814; C6*A21 = 0,055; C7*1 = 1,000; APOC2*1 = 1,000. Les résultats confirment chaque fois que la comparison est possible, une tr`es bonne ressemblance des Cayapa avec les autres populations aborig`enes d'Amérique.
