Relying on Teachers: a new Swedish in‐service method for school development

Pages 175-183 | Published online: 12 Sep 2006

ABSTRACT

The decentralisation of the Swedish school system has brought in‐service training into focus. In this project we were looking for new forms of in‐service training which are more in line with the teachers' own ideas about developing their method of teaching. The project was planned to cover 2 years. During the first year, the teachers spent 5 days with a member of the research team discussing and formulating their particular area within the development project. During the second year, the teachers carried out their development projects and noted the results. They then presented these projects at a symposium. The main purpose of the projects was to find new forms of in‐service training. A second aim was to encourage teachers to discuss and think about their teaching in connection with development work.
