Abstract

The water-soluble yellow substance formed by the reaction of alumina and carbon disulfide first reported by Perry in 1925 is identified as sodium trithiocarbonate and/or sodium hydrogen trithiocarbonate (depending on the pH) on the basis of comparative electronic absorption spectra and chemical tests. Electronic absorption spectra of sodium tri- and tetrathiocarbonates under various conditions are reported.
