Counselling Victims of Rape

Pages 33-39 | Published online: 15 Apr 2008

Abstract

In mid-1977 the Queen Victoria Hospital established a medical and social work service for victims of sexual assault. This includes male and female victims of all ages and incest victims as well as rape victims. The source of referral is almost always the Police Surgeon who examines the person in Casualty Department in order to treat any injuries and collect evidence for legal proceedings. Follow-up medical treatment includes testing for sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, and termination of pregnancy is available if this is the woman's choice.
