Hydraulicity of Blast Furnace Slag in Relation to Composition

Pages 112-115 | Published online: 11 Jul 2014

Abstract

An investigation was made on the hydraulicity of slag in the system CaO-Al2O3-SiO2, prepared by melting in oxy-acetylene flame followed by quenching in water. Compressive strength of lime-slag mixtures and absorption of lime by slag during hydration were measured. Results showed that (1) increase of both CaO and Al2O3 in the slag increase slag hydraulicity, (2) lime is absorbed by slag during hydration, the amount depending upon CaO content of slag and its hydraulicity, (3) decrease of hydraulicity due to decrease of CaO content of slag can be partially compensated by an increase of lime in lime-slag mixture.
