2 Other conventional treatments of that time included the consumption of mercury paste, sulphuric acid, and hydrochloric acid, e.g., for the treatment of syphilis. These were sometimes successful in addressing symptoms, but often killed the patient at the same time (cf. Singh & Ernst, Citation2008).
