INVENTORY: THE OPPORTUNITY COST OF QUALITY

Pages 40-47 | Received 01 Apr 1992, Published online: 30 May 2007

Abstract

An increasingly comprehensive understanding of the costs associated with quality (good or bad) has been a driving force behind the rising emphasis on total quality management. Descriptions of these costs, however, have not previously included the costs of inventory. The relationship between quality and inventory is explored in this paper and an approach for estimating the inventory dollar costs due to poor quality is described.
