Performance, HR Practices and the HR Manager in Small Entrepreneurial Firms

Abstract

Research indicating a positive relationship between effective Human Resource (HR) activities (high-performance work systems [HPWS]) and performance has focused primarily on large organizations. The present study provides evidence that the relationship also holds for small firms. As well, the presence of an HR manager is related to having HPWS. However, the effects of firm size on the presence of an HR manager, the incidence of HPWS, and on organizational performance were insignificant. Differences between our findings and similar research are also discussed.

Les recherches mettant en évidence une relation positive entre les activités efficaces de ressources humaines (RH) (méthodes de travail à haut rendement [MTHR]) et le rendement d’une entreprise se sont concentrées, jusqu’à maintenant, surtout sur les grandes entreprises. Notre étude révèle que cette relation positive est aussi de mise dans les petites entreprises. De plus, la présence d’un gestionnaire des RH et la présence de MTHR sont étroitement liées. Toutefois, il n’y avait aucune corrélation significative entre la taille de l’entreprise et la présence d’un gestionnaire des RH, l’existence de MTHR et le rendement organisationnel. Nous discuterons également de certains résultats de notre étude qui diffèrent de ceux d’autres études similaires.
