Web Site Utilization in SME Business Strategy: The Case of Canadian Wine SMEs

Abstract

This paper reports on empirical reseazch focused on how small- and medium-size Canadian enterprises operating in the wine sector utilize the Internet in their marketing and business strategies to provide information to consumers, create relationships with consumers, and utilize online e-commerce channels to sell more or all of what they produce. Based on a content analysis of the web sites of a randomly selected sample of Canadian wineries, this research found that a very high proportion of SME wineries utilize web sites in their marketing and business strategies. The highest proportion of wineries utilize their sites for providing information, followed by use for e-commerce, and by use of the site for creating and developing relationships with existing and potential consumers. Use of web sites for more sophisticated purposes (e-commerce and relationship building) is significantly related to exporting wine outside of the direct region where the SME winery is located geographically.

Cet article rapporte les resultats dune etude empirique qui await pour but de comprendre la fagon dont les PME canadiennes faisant affaire dans le secteur du vin se prevalent de 1’internet daps leurs strategies d'affaires et de marketing pour fournir de 1’information aux consommateurs et Greer des liens avec ceux-ci. De plus, 1’etude examine la fa∼on dont ces PME utilisent les diverses avenues de commerce electronique afire d'augmenter leurs ventes ou d'ecouler toute leur production. En se basant sur une analyse du contenu des sites internet d'un echantillon aleatoire de vineries canadiennes, cette etude revele qu'une tres forte proportion des vineries PME utilisent leur site internet daps leur strategie d'affaires et de marketing. La plus grande proportion des PME utilisent leur site pour fournir de 1’infonnation aux consommateurs. Suivent 1’utilisation du site internet pour le commerce electronique et la creation et le developpement de liens avec les clients actuels et potentiels. L'utilisation des sites internet a des fins plus sophistiquees telles que le commerce electronique et 1’etablissement de liens avec les consommateurs est liee de fa∼on significative a 1’exportation du vin au-dela de la region immediate oix la vinerie PME est sittxee geographiquement.
