Abstract

Project management has been identified as an asset allowing firms to remain competitive. However, the subject is rarely discussed in small business literature. It is the subject of this exploratory study that documents the different processes and institutional contexts for establishing the success criteria of projects in order to answer the following question: how do small firms operating in the service sector differ regarding the success criteria of their projects? This study puts forward three main differences: 1) the firm's limited resources results in a less formal and inclusive evaluation process; 2) two main factors influence the process—the owner and the clients; and 3) the managers give more weight to the criteria linked to the reputation of the firm. This study identifies the key elements needed to develop a future analysis model regarding the success criteria of projects of small firms operating in the service sector.
