Abstract

This paper is an overview and assessment of economic and demographic trends that will influence rural housing during the next few years. Trends providing a renewed interest in rural housing issues include a recent stabilization and growth in rural population, increases in rural second homes and in recreational developments, development of retirement communities in what were previously rural areas and energy development in relatively isolated areas. if the reversal in population trends is sustained, housing concerns in rural areas probably will receive greatly increased attention during the coming decade.
