John Gilbert – A Publisher’s note

It was with deep sadness that we learned of Professor John Gilbert’s passing, recently.

John became Associate Editor of the International Journal of Science Education (IJSE) in 1988, eventually succeeding Richard Kempa as Editor in 1991. John assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal in 2007.

Under John’s leadership as Editor-in-Chief (a position now jointly-held by Jan van Driel and Gail Jones) IJSE grew markedly in stature and influence and remained true to its mission of publishing truly international science education research.

On a personal note, I would like to say it was a privilege and an honour to have worked with John. I also got to know him as a friend and someone who genuinely had the (science) education of children at heart. John was always a generous host at our regular editorial strategy meetings – usually held at his home. One of our most productive meetings – held over very strong coffee and biscuits – resulted in the idea for IJSE, Part B: Communication and Public Engagement – a new journal – the development of which John was very proud.

On behalf of everyone at Routledge/Taylor & Francis, we extend our deepest sympathies to John’s family.

I am sure that John will be greatly missed by all those who knew and worked with him.

John Gilbert, 1940–2020
