Abstract

A modified concept tree graph technique is used to identify the alternative conceptions that pupils have of the interrelation between concepts in the domain of ‘reflection of light’. A comparative study of the alternative conceptions of pupils and teachers is performed. The conceptual gaps, between the formal concepts and the personal concepts thus identified, are discussed. The change in alternative conceptions over time is also analysed. The potential of this technique for future research is briefly reviewed.
