Quality networking comprises transaction activities between members of regional and inter(national) networks that enable the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of quality, in order to increase quality awareness and improve companies' performance. This paper presents the results of a study into quality networking in Europe. We distinguish between different types of networking initiatives as well as conditions for success. Different types of quality networks can be distinguished: schemes, organizations, clubs and committees. Schemes are well defined in terms of target group and objectives. The general structure of schemes is small-sized working groups on a sectoral or geographical basis. Organizations offer a larger number of (broad) activities. The scope is in general total quality management. Clubs usually have an informal structure, aimed at exchange of quality-related information and experience. Finally, committees are specialized consultative bodies or supra-networks of experts representing various individual networking organizations. Participating in quality networks is very valuable for individual quality mangers, who in general are uncertain about how to start quality improvement in their own organizations. Moreover, successful companies like to share their success or best practices with others.
