A Diagrammatic Aid to Course Assessment and Development

Pages 233-244 | Published online: 09 Jul 2006

Summary

A method is presented providing insight into the overall achievement and quality of a course based on two relatively independent measures of student performance. The method generates an XY plot of students’ results and a line of best fit is created. The results and the line of best fit are plotted over a template displaying expectations for the course in terms of levels and grades of success. This expectation appears as an ellipse and the measure of overall course achievement is provided by the extent, displacement and orientation of the line of best fit to the major axis of the ellipse. The basis for the ellipse is described, sample results and possible interpretations are provided. The use of the method raises issues related to overall course development and module/unit integration for use in programme review procedures.
