Notes

This paper began as a reply to a paper called ‘The “Intellectualisation of Appearances” ‘ by Carol van Kirk. Both Professor van Kirk's paper and my reply were delivered on 26 April 1991 at the Central Division meetings of the American Philosophical Association. I am grateful to Professor van Kirk, as well as to participants in the discussion, for stimulating and helping to clarify my thoughts on the Amphiboly section of the First Critique. I gratefully acknowledge further debts to Karl Ameriks, Michael Friedman, George di Giovanni, Stephen Menn, Miles Rind and Catherine Wilson.
