Pages 499-507 | Received 01 Aug 1992, Accepted 01 Jul 1993, Published online: 11 Apr 2007

Abstract

Salmon farming has been an unprecedented success. It has provided employment and incomes, and has revived isolated communities. Europe maintains its dominance in salmon farming, but other countries such as Chile and Canada are becoming important producers. The paper describes the development of the industry in Europe, with an emphasis on its lessons for policy‐makers.
