Maintenance and repair of spraying equipment

Pages 266-281 | Published online: 13 Nov 2008

Abstract

In recent years there has been a considerable increase in the use of pesticides in developing countries. In particular the rising costs of hand labour and changes in agricultural practice has resulted in an increase in the use of herbicides for weed control. Small portable, hand‐operated sprayers are most popular. Safe and efficient application depends on good care and maintenance of the equipment, and much time and money can be saved if the operator is able to make any small repairs necessary when the machine breaks down. Details are given in this paper for the routine maintenance and repair of five main types of small sprayers including hydraulic energy and spinning‐disc type sprayers. Check lists are included to help identify the cause of a breakdown together with hints to prolong the life of the sprayers.
