Abstract
Basta, a new non‐selective contact herbicide, was screened for bio‐efficacy in comparison with Roundup and Gramoxone against Kikuyu grass. The efficacy of Basta increased with increased rates and frequency of application. Overall, Roundup at the commercial rate (6 litres/ha), gave better weed control than all rates of Basta tested except 6 litres/ha. Even at this rate, Basta was only as good as Roundup over the first 6 weeks. Gramoxone was inferior to Basta in suppressing weed growth. The implications of these results are discussed.
