The achievement rate of students at GCSE Grades A* to G cited as 88% included achievement in English and mathematics. Page 327, lines 24–25, should read as follows:

‘Almost 70% achieved five or more GCSEs (or the equivalent) grade A* to C; 88% achieved five or more GCSEs (or the equivalent) grade A* to G including English and mathematics; and 98% achieved five or more GCSEs (or the equivalent) grade A* to G (DCSF 2009c).’

The author sincerely regrets this error.
