Abstract
A considerabJe amount has been written about the knowledge required to read maps. In addition, the qualities that differentiate expert map readers from other map readers have been described in detail. However, little seems to be known about the content and structure of experts' repertoires of declarative and procedural knowledge, the interrelationships between their repertoires of declarative and procedural knowledge and the cognitive mechanisms that underlie their map reading behaviour. This article reports on a pilot study that is being undertaken to investigate the development of a production system that will facilitate the development of intelligent computer assisted instruction within the domain of map reading. It demonstrates the nature of such a production system for a single expert map reader.
