ABSTRACT
This paper reports on the archaeological recording and recovery of a MK II Fairey Barracuda from the Solent, Hampshire, off the south coast of England. As its location precluded the aircraft being left in situ, the decision was made to recover the aircraft. Despite adverse visibility, and a significant amount of overburden, the extant remains of the aircraft were successfully recovered and delivered to the Fleet Air Arm Museum for conservation, as part of an ongoing project to rebuild an example of a Fairey Barracuda. In being recovered for reuse and exhibition some of the Barracuda’s value to the wider community changed from that of a lost military aircraft to that of an historic object, drawing out the social history around it, and giving insights into military aircraft construction during the World War II.

Este artículo informa acerca del registro arqueológico y la recuperación de un Fairey Barracuda MK II en El Solent, Hampshire, frente a la costa sur de Inglaterra. Debido a que su ubicación impedía dejar la aeronave in situ, se tomó la decisión de recuperarla. A pesar de la visibilidad adversa y una sobrecarga significativa, los restos existentes de la aeronave fueron recuperados con éxito y entregados al Museo del Arma Aérea de la Flota para su conservación, como parte de un proyecto en curso para reconstruir un ejemplar de un Fairey Barracuda. يُقدم هذا المقال تقريراً عن التسجيل الأثري لطائرة MK الثانية فيري باراكودا وانتشالها من سولنت، هامبشاير، قٌبالة الساحل الجنوبي لإنجلترا. ونظراً لأن موقع الطائرة حال دون تركها في الموقع، فقد تم اتخاذ القرار بانتشالها. وعلى الرغم من الرؤية غير الجيدة بالموقع والعراقيل، إلا أن فقد تم انتشال بقايا الطائرة بنجاح وتسليمها إلى متحف ذراع الأسطول الجوي للترميم، وهذا كجزء من مشروع مستمر لإعادة بناء نموذج لفيري باراكودا. ومن الجدير بالذكر انه عند انتشالها بغرض إعادة الإستخدام والعرض، فلقد تغيرت قيمة باراكودا بالنسبة للمجتمع الأوسع من كونها طائرة عسكرية مفقودة إلى شيئاً تاريخياً يستخلص تاريخاً اجتماعياً حولها، ويُعطي نظرة ثاقبة لبناء الطائرات العسكرية خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية.
