Citric fruits constitute an important commodity in Mexico. However, because of significant post-harvest loses (up to 40%), the citrus industry in Mexico requires optimization. The presence of pathogenic fungi affecting root system, stem, leaves and fruits, represent a risk for ulterior development of post-harvest rotting. In this work, several varieties of orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck), Valencia Temprana, Valencia Tardía y Washington Navel, grown in Comondú, Baja California Sur, México were analyzed, aiming to identify the corresponding pathogenic fungi present on the fruit surface. Several fungi belonging to Aspergillus, Fusarium and Penicillium genera were isolated. Sequence analysis of their ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA region showed that the fungi correspond to A. flavus, F. oxysporum, P. digitatum, P. italicum, and P. variabile species, which are known to cause diseases affecting fruit quality. This work identify suitable treatments for citrus production in Baja California Sur in order to extend their shelf-life and quality to compete in national and international markets successfully.

Los cítricos son uno de los principales productos agrícolas de México. Sin embargo, debido a las pérdidas significativas en poscosecha (hasta un 40%) es importante optimizar su producción. La presencia de hongos fitopatógenos que atacan la raíz, tronco, hojas y frutos constituyen un factor de riesgo para el desarrollo de este cultivo. En este trabajo se analizaron las variedades de naranja (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) Valencia Temprana, Valencia Tardía y Washington Navel cultivada en la zona de Comondú, Baja California Sur, México, para identificar los hongos fitopatógenos que pudieran afectar la calidad de los frutos durante su almacenamiento. Se aislaron e identificaron morfológicamente varios hongos pertenecientes a los géneros Aspergillus, Fusarium y Penicillium. El análisis de la secuencia de la región ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 del rDNA demostró que las especies aisladas fueron A. flavus, F. oxysporum, P. digitatum, P. italicum y P. variabile, los cuales son agentes causales de pudriciones y enfermedades en los frutos, afectando su calidad. Este trabajo posibilita la adopción de medidas de tratamiento y biocontrol de las enfermedades de la naranja cultivada en Baja California Sur con el objeto de extender su vida de anaquel y competir exitosamente en los mercados nacional e internacional.
