Promoting Communicative Activities in Grammar Teaching in China

Pages 121-127 | Published online: 11 Mar 2014

Abstract

Grammar teaching in China has been occupying an important position, especially in non-English major English language teaching class. Even now, on the eve of the new millennium, much of the College English teaching scene is still under the sway of the age-old grammar-translation tradition and the teaching materials and examinations are full of grammar questions. As a result, taken as a whole, Chinese university students have a strong knowledge of grammar rules, but they always find it hard to communicate with each other in English.

One of the ways to solve this problem is to promote communicative activities in grammar teaching, integrating grammar teaching with listening, speaking and writing. Based on the rationale of communicative approach, this article demonstrates how to integrate grammar teaching with the above three language learning skills with a sample lesson plan. The sample lesson plan includes five activities, showing step by step how to help students learn the target structure, with the teacher as an organiser, facilitator and co-communicator. The author, as an experienced teacher in China, is keenly aware of the constraints, but firmly believes that teachers can still do something to remedy the current practice of the English grammar teaching, with the hope to improve the communicative competence of Chinese college students in general.
