Adjustment to the first year in school — A Singapore perspective

SUMMARY

This paper investigates the concept of adjustment to school for a group of primary one (first grade) pupils in Singapore. Pupils rated by their teachers as being well adjusted obtained significantly higher grades at the end of the school year, did not require additional learning support, and exhibited better social skills compared to children judged to be poorly adjusted. Of interest are factors that contribute to successful adjustment in the first year of school in an examination-oriented educational system: children's primary home language, pre-requisite entry skills from preschool, and the father's occupation. Implications for early childhood educators and parents are discussed.

RÉSUMÉ

Cet article porte sur le concept d'adaptation à l'école chez des élèves de CP à Singapour. Les élèves jugés par leurs enseignants comme bien adaptés obtiennent des résultats significativement supérieurs à la fin de l'année scolaire, n'ont pas besoin de soutien scolaire, et manifestent de meilleures compétences sociales que les enfants jugés peu adaptés. Sont particulièrement intéressants les facteurs qui contribuent à l'adaptation réussie lors de la première année d'école dans un système éducatif qui accorde une grande importance aux examens: la première langue des enfants à la maison, les compétences prérequises depuis la maternelle et la profession du père. La discussion porte sur les implications pour les éducateurs du préscolaire et pour les parents.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG

Untersucht wurde das Konzept der Anpassung an die Schule bei einer Gruppe von Schulkindern der ersten Klasse in Singapur. Schulkinder, die von den Lehrkräften als gut angepasst beschrieben wurden, erreichten am Ende des Schuljahres signifikant bessere Noten, erhielten keine zusätzliche Lernunterstützung und sie zeigten bessere soziale Fertigkeiten verglichen mit Kindern, die als schlecht angepasst beurteilt wurden. Interessant sind Faktoren, die in einem an Prüfungen orientierten Bildungssystem zu einer erfolgreichen Anpassung am Beginn des Schulbesuchs beitragen: Die Erstsprache in der häuslichen Umgebung des Kindes, in der Vorschule erworbene Fähigkeiten zum Schuleintritt und die Beschäftigung des Vaters. Implikationen für frühpädagogische Fachkräfte und für Eltern werden diskutiert.

El artículo estudia el concepto de adaptación escolar en un grupo de alumnos del primer grado en Singapore. Los alumnos calificados por sus maestros como bien adaptados, obtienen calificaciones significativamente superiores al finalizar el primer año, no requieren apoyo especial para el aprendizaje, y muestran una mejor conducta social, que los niños juzgados como menos adaptados. Factores que contribuyen a una buena adaptación en el primer año, en un sistema educacional basado en exámenes, son el primer idioma en el hogar, las habilidades requeridas para ingresar a la educación pre-escolar, y la ocupación del padre. Las implicaciones para los maestros parvularios y padres son discutidas.
