An affordance network for engagement: increasing parent and family agency in an early childhood education setting

Abstract

Research from the United Kingdom suggests that early childhood centres that operate from a multi or integrated service model, offering opportunities for parents to attend to a range of their needs and aspirations, increase the ability and the inclination of families to engage with their child's learning at the early childhood centre. Integrated service models of early childhood education are a relatively new concept in Aotearoa New Zealand and it is only within the last three years that the government has introduced initiatives based on integrated services in early childhood education. This article reports on one initiative at one early childhood centre involved in the implementation of integrated services: the establishment of a playgroup for parents and caregivers with babies and toddlers. The authors analysed the impact of one of these initiatives, applying the notion of an affordance network for engagement as opportunities that are available, inviting, and personalising: a framework that described affordances that progressively increased the possibilities of agency for the families.

RESUME: Des recherches faites au Royaume-Uni suggèrent que les centres de la petite enfance qui fonctionnent sur un modèle intégré ou multi-services, offrant des opportunités aux parents de s'occuper de toute une gamme de besoins et d'aspirations augmentent la capacité et la tendance des familles à s'engager dans l'apprentissage de leur enfant au centre de la petite enfance. Les modèles de service intégré de la petite enfance sont un concept relativement nouveau en Aotearoa-Nouvelle Zélande et ce n'est que lors des trois dernières années que le gouvernement a introduit des initiatives basées sur les services intégrés de la petite enfance. Cet article rapporte une initiative dans un centre d'éducation de la petite enfance impliqué dans la mise en œuvre de services intégrés : la création d'un groupe de jeux pour des personnels de soin et des parents ayant des bébés ou des tout-petits. Les auteurs ont analysé l'impact d'une de ces initiatives, mettant en pratique la notion d'un réseau d' « affordance » pour l'engagement en tant qu'opportunités disponibles, attrayantes, et personnalisées : un cadre qui décrit les « affordances » comme augmentant progressivement les possibilités du pouvoir d'agir (agency) des familles.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Forschungen aus Großbritannien deuten darauf hin, dass Kindertageseinrichtungen, die auf einem Multi- oder Integriertem Leistungsmodell basieren und Eltern Möglichkeiten bieten sich ihren eigenen Bedürfnissen und Bestrebungen/Ambitionen zu widmen, die Fähigkeit und Bereitschaft der Familien erhöhen, am Lernen ihres Kindes in der Tageseinrichtung teilzunehmen. Integrierte Leistungsmodelle frühkindlicher Erziehung sind ein relativ neues Konzept in Aotearoa Neuseeland und erst in den letzten 3 Jahren hat die Regierung Initiativen eingeführt die auf integrierten Modellen in der frühkindlichen Erziehung basieren. Dieser Artikel befasst sich mit einer Initiative in einer Tageseinrichtung die an der Realisierung integrierter Angebote beteiligt ist: der Einführung einer Spielgruppe für Eltern und Betreuer/innen von Babys und Kleinkindern. Die Autoren analysierten den Einfluss einer dieser Initiativen unter Verwendung eines Netzwerkes handlungsauffordernder Umweltgegebenheiten, hier verstanden als Möglichkeiten die vorhanden, einladend und personalisiert sind: ein Referenzrahmen, welcher handlungsauffordernde Umweltgegebenheiten beschreibt, die stufenweise die Möglichkeiten zur Handlungsfähigkeit der Familien erhöht.

RESUMEN: Estudios del Reino Unido, sugieren que los centros de educación infantil, que operan desde un modelo de servicios integrados o multiservicios, ofrecen la oportunidad a los padres de atender a las necesidades y aspiraciones de sus hijos y, de este modo, aumentar la capacidad y la motivación de las familias invitándoles a colaborar con la educación de sus hijos en los centros. Los modelos de servicios integrados en la educación de la primera infancia son un concepto relativamente nuevo en Aotaera, Nueva Zelanda. En los últimos tres años el gobierno ha introducido iniciativas basadas en servicios integrados en la educación para la primera infancia. Este documento muestra la iniciativa de un centro de educación infantil donde se incorpora estos servicios: la creación de una guardería para padres, cuidadores, bebes y niños pequeños. Los autores han analizado el impacto de una de estas iniciativas, la cual se explica como la noción de una red de gran participación, como oportunidades disponibles, atractivas y personalizadas: un marco que describe el desarrollo potencial que aumenta de forma progresiva con las posibilidades de actividad familiar.
