Notes

1 Here I would like to draw attention Benjamin's critique of authenticity in art and in culture, which emerges as a counter-argument to the contemporary æsthetic writings of Martin Heidegger, who, in his oft-quoted essay, ‘The Origin of the Work of Art’, removes the object/work of art from the social, posits the aura as an æsthetic, spiritual and cultural principle, as well as valorizes the aura as metasocial, metapolitical and metacultural world. This process of æsthetic and cultural essentialism is clearly visible in his well-known discussion of Vincent Van Gogh's painting of a pair of peasant shoes. For a detailed discussion, see Heidegger (Citation2001).

2 For a detailed discussion of these two meetings, see Świgęcicki (2004), chapter 3.
