Abstract

Though I play with words, I also note ultimately the limits of only playing with words. At least three journeys following arts practices across borders are intermingled in this essay. They travel through various discourses in different directions and no doubt echo many other similar journeys. Though there is a basis In actuality to all the journeys, my theme is metaphor (L. metaphors from Gk: a transfer, akin to metaphérein to transfer). What transfers are undertaken when metaphors are used to conceive and recount experience? What transpositions take place when artforms cross cultural boundaries? What are the implications of both metaphor and brute power in the making of maps?
