Hanging from Knowledge: Vertical dance as spatial fieldwork

Pages 49-58 | Published online: 10 Dec 2010

Notes

1 Descent of the Angel was first performed on Guildford Cathedral as part of Guildford International Music Festival on 20 March 2009. It was subsequently performed again on Guildford Cathedral for the British Science Festival on 7 September 2009.

2 Descent of the Angel was performed on the National Library of Wales for the AHRC Living Landscapes conference on 19 June 2009.

3 Vertical dance uses rock climbing equipment, such as harnesses, ropes and grigris (a self-locking device that enables a dancer to maintain a fixed point on a rope, and to descend).

4 As stated above, note that the ‘vertical’ in vertical dance refers to the wall, not the position of the dancer's body, which, more often than not, is horizontal to the ground.
