4 The Andean uplands are a unique high-elevation wetland ecosystem providing Bogotá, a metropolis of more than seven million people, with about 70 per cent of its drinking water (Postel Citation2005: 26). At a moment in global history in which ‘water resources are declining in quantity and quality in virtually every part of the world’ (Waterkeeper Alliance Citation2010), the aim of Hacer Memoria al Andar was also to enable walker-participants to experience this crucial ecosystem of shared concern and to enable them to realize that it pays to protect it.
