1 This account has been mistakenly attributed to Louis Petit de Bachaumont because it appeared in the Mémoires Secrets, to which Bachaumont contributed before his death in 1771. It cannot of course have been written by Bachaumont in 1781, nor by his fellow editor Mathieu-François Pidansat de Mairobert, who died in 1779. I have attributed it here to Barthélemy-François-Joseph Mouffle d'Angerville, who continued the Mémoires secrets into the 1780s.
