Notes

1 Camphor is a strongsmelling substance used in Hindu religious ceremonies.

2 Ghee is clarified butter, especially as used in Indian cooking. Ghee is widely used in rituals in India, usually involving fire.

3 Dalda was a popular brand of hydrogenated vegetable oil marketed as ‘vegetable ghee’ when I was growing up in India. Once empty, Dalda cans were used for carrying liquids.
