Philippe Petit and his walk between the Twin Towers

Pages 30-35 | Published online: 01 Nov 2013

Notes

1 The text was later re-issued under the title Man on Wire, after the success of the documentary film of the same name that won the 2009 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

2 According to Kurt Wurmli, who worked as Petit's assistant after the Twin Towers walk, this was an intended effect: ‘During his act, Petit performed a figure called the “Home Coming Worker.” It was a way of walking on the cable that he created and dedicated to the working people. Like the worker at the end of the day who takes his shovel on his shoulders, and ambles home relaxed, peaceful and satisfied. Philippe Petit takes his balancing pole on one shoulder, while the other arm hangs relaxed at his side. His head is turned away from the cable and his eyes seem to wander. He continues his peaceful walk’ (Wurmli Citation1997: 120).
