The Cold War aesthetics of truth and deception in espionage theatre

Notes

1 After his release from prison in 1970, Houghton married Gee and published an autobiography entitled Operation Portland in which he specifically states that his motivations were ‘not political, ideological or what have you, but just the sheer exhilaration (even when it was frightening) of getting a scarifying job done in the face of awful risks’ (1972: 71).

2 For a basic discussion of ‘deep cover’ operations in police work, see Gary T. Marx’s classic study, Under Cover: Police surveillance in America (1988: 88–96, 169–72).

3 Some of the best accounts of the Krogers’ peculiar history are to be found in Chester Hearn’s Spies and Espionage: A directory (2006). My account of the Krogers’ history is largely based upon Hearn’s.
