Abstract

The main purpose of this work is to investigate the yield criterion and dynamic response of fully clamped slender rectangular sandwich tubes with metal foam core struck by a low-velocity heavy mass. A plastic yield criterion is proposed for the rectangular sandwich tubes with metal foam core. Using the yield criterion, analytical solutions are derived for the dynamic response of fully clamped slender rectangular sandwich tubes with metal foam core struck by a low-velocity heavy mass, in which the foam core strength effect and the interaction of bending and stretching are considered. Numerical calculations are carried out to predict the dynamic response of the rectangular sandwich tubes under low-velocity impact. The analytical model captures the numerical results reasonably. The effects of foam core strength and wall thickness of tube on the dynamic response are discussed in detail. It is shown that the present analytical model can reasonably predict the dynamic response of the rectangular sandwich tube with metal foam core under the low-velocity impact.
