Agriculture is important for different reasons in different parts of the world and sustainability is defined in many ways. Sustainability may be a necessary but is never a sufficient condition. Agriculturally, it must involve the responsible use of resources, mainly in order to produce the food needed, but this is quite different from ensuring that people are adequately fed. This depends on their being able to buy food at a price for which producers can afford to produce it. Increasingly, however, there are concerns about the methods of farming, especially in relation to animal welfare and environmental impact.
