Abstract
The authors have been researching aspects of the evolving partnership between higher education institutions providing initial teacher training and their primary school partners. They have examined the new roles and responsibilities which have developed as a result of government changes to teacher training and evaluated the effects of mentor training on the teachers involved. This article moves the focus of the research to a consideration of how student teachers undertaking practice in schools contribute to the teaching and learning environment. It draws on data gathered from three higher education institutions and their partner schools through questionnaires and follow-up interviews with headteachers. The findings indicate that student teachers can have a positive impact on the classroom.
