This article reviews recent research on sadomasochistically oriented behaviour. Topics include: (a) demographics of individuals who participate in sadomasochistic sex; (b) the sexual characteristics of this group of individuals; (c) sexual behaviours involved and the nature of the underlying relationship of these behaviours to one another; (d) family background; and (e) experiences of childhood sexual abuse. The article ends with a summary of the major findings and some suggestions for future research.
