Abstract

The purpose of the authors in this study was to examine challenges that threaten food banks' continued operations and identify desirable resources to improve the functions of food banks. A questionnaire was mailed to all 69 food banks located in the county of California's capital, yielding 20 usable questionnaires. Ninety-three percent more meals were served daily during weekdays than weekends. Food banks received the most food donations and monetary donations from individuals. The most significant challenges of the food banks were insufficient money to operate and lack of space/location, which were also identified as desirable resources to serve more meals.
