4Adequate Yearly Progress is the way that school accountability is established under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. It requires that schools test all students in Grades 3 to 8 plus one secondary-level grade in reading and math. Schools are evaluated as to whether the percentage of students who reach “proficient” in each grade and population subgroup is increasing toward the eventual goal of 100% in the year 2014. Actually, the goal is more like 95%, as this is the percentage of students enrolled at the time of testing who have to participate in the testing program.
