ETHICAL ISSUES IN PRACTICE

Seeking Ethical Symmetry—An Analysis of Criminal Justice Social Work Practice with a Female ‘Offender’

Abstract

This paper draws on the author's experience as a student social worker in the Scottish criminal justice social work system to explore questions of relational ethics and the challenges of mobilising an ethically symmetrical relationship in contexts with pre-existing power imbalances. This experience enables a critique of risk management models and makes a contribution to desistance theory.
