In Memoriam: Manono Poo

Angeline Manono Poo passed away on the 08th of July, 2021. Her last paper entitled Patterned Differences in Grade 3 Mathematics Teachers’ Working with Representations Across Two Language Contexts: Implications for Learning Opportunities published posthumously in ARJMSTE bears testimony to her scholarly attributes and passion for mathematics in the Foundation Phase.

Manono was a lecturer and senior tutor at Wits University, School of Education. Born on the 22nd of July, 1965, she joined the School of Education in 2008 after a varied and wide experience in teaching Mathematics at several renowned schools and NGOs and at a Media house. When she joined Wits, she began teaching Numeracy in the BEd Foundation Phase and in no time became an expert in the teaching of Mathematics and the training of Foundation Phase teachers. In addition, she taught a number of different courses one of which was Becoming a Teacher. She was the BEd Foundation Studies Programme coordinator and has been the Teaching Practice coordinator for a number of years. Her contribution to education in the country and more especially in the Foundation Studies Division is more than exemplary.

During the course of her work, she also taught in the Honours programme, teaching Mathematics and the Young Child and has supervised a number of Honours and Masters students. She also served as Head of Division in Foundation Studies for two years. Her passion for teaching and research led her to write and publish a number of papers based on Mathematics. While doing this, she enrolled to do her PhD in the same field which she completed in 2020.

Manono’s resume bears testimony to the very hard-working, committed, dedicated and professional educator and academic she was. She was a most unselfish person who was willing to share her knowledge with anyone who required assistance.

Manono was also very endearing to her students throughout her years and students respected her as an expert in her field and looked up to her for guidance and support.

We will always remember Manono with all her special nuances – her beauty and, her grace, her bright smile, her collegiality, her loyalty, her sense of humour, her integrity, her knowledge and as a very special friend and for all our memories from the days gone by that we were privileged to share with her.
