ABSTRACT
Sustainability continues as one of the most commonly discussed trends within the hotel industry. An extensive comprehensive review of previous literature identified 128 articles focusing on sustainability within the industry: management, energy conservation, and education. The studies were broken down into seven categories, allowing for identification of trends. Researchers’ review of the articles identified the most dominant contributors to academic research and the publications which most prominently feature research on the subjects relevant to hotel sustainability. The balanced scorecard categorized research based on five perspectives, identifying the most dominant research on sustainability within the hotel industry. The current study illustrates literature gaps showing what areas research is lacking, allowing future researchers to fill in the holes with future studies.
