EDITORIAL: The Journal – 10 years on

The International Journal of Science Education Part B: Communication and Public Engagement was launched in 2011, with the aim of creating a niche for the publication of research into science communication in practice, especially in the public domain, and for research into informal learning. We began with three issues annually, under the wise guidance of Professor John Gilbert who was then also the Editor-in-Chief of Part A of the Journal. John had passionately lobbied for the establishment of Part B and we were fortunate in our inaugural Editorial Board of supportive international science communicators. We soon progressed to four issues a year, as the Journal gained in popularity and exposure. It is gratifying that the Journal is now listed on the SCOPUS database, an early goal that John saw come to fruition just before his untimely death in 2020. He took great pride in the high profile that the Journal has achieved, justifying his belief that there was, indeed, a niche to fill. Currently, there are thousands of downloads every year of what are, evidently, significant papers in the discipline.

The current Editors, Sue Stocklmayer and Léonie Rennie, decided to mark the tenth anniversary with an expanded Editorial Board, We are delighted to welcome the following members:

  • Professor Ayelet Baram-Tsabari, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology

  • Professor John Besley, Michigan State University, USA

  • Associate Professor Maurice M.W. Cheng, The University of Waikato, New Zealand

  • Professor Martha Marandino, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil

  • Professor Michael J. Reiss, University College London

  • Professor Hannu Salmi, University of Turku, Finland

  • Professor Yonah Seleti, Department of Science and Innovation, Republic of South Africa

  • Associate Professor Clare Wilkinson, University of the West of England, Bristol

We are also delighted that inaugural members, Professors Bruce Lewenstein, Justin Dillon, Gail Jones and Per Hetland have consented to remain on the Board. It is with gratitude and appreciation that we record our thanks to Professors Masakata Ogawa and Leo Tan, who have stepped down. Masakata and Leo are towering figures in science communication and have given much to the establishment of disciplinary theory and practice over many years. We hope that they both enjoy a very happy retirement.

Thank you to all our contributors, reviewers and readers over the past ten years. We anticipate that, as the discipline grows, so will this Journal, continuing to provide an outlet for significant research in the communication of science.
