The fabrication strategies for chitosan/poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) based hydrogels and their biomedical applications: A focused review

ABSTRACT

Chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) blend provide enhanced mechanical properties, biocompatibility, stability, antimicrobial properties, and versatility in fabrication. Due to these inherent biocompatible and antimicrobial properties, CS/PVP based hydrogels have been used in various biomedical applications. Herein, we have provided an overview of the recent developments in the fabrication of CS/PVP hydrogels and their nanocomposite with better structural and functional properties. Combining CS/PVP with nano-architectures results in amendments in the structure and properties of the CS/PVP matrices. Hence, recent developments in using CS/PVP hydrogels and their nanocomposites for drug delivery, protein/gene delivery, and wound healing applications are described here.

Muhammad Asim Raza

Muhammad Asim Raza is currently working as an International Research Professor (Assistant Professor) at the School of Chemical Engineering, Yeungnam University, Gyeongsan, South Korea. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Radiation Science and Technology, University of Science and Technology, South Korea in 2022. He is a polymer scientist, and his research interests lie in biopolymer and synthetic polymer-based hydrogels for drug delivery applications. Besides, he is also intrigued to work in other areas, such as polymer membranes for reverse osmosis desalination. He has published more than 10 research articles and has more than 170 citations on his name with an h-index of 8.

Khurram Shahzad

Khurram Shahzad is currently working as a Ph.D. student at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute, University of Science & Technology, South Korea. He obtained his Master from the Department of Chemistry, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Pakistan in 2021. He is a chemist and his research interests lie in biomaterials synthesis and medicinal, biomedical applications.

Shiv Dutt Purohit

Shiv Dutt Purohit is currently working as an International Research Professor (Assistant professor) at the School of Chemical Engineering, Yeungnam University, Gyeongsan, South Korea. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Polymer and Process Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2021. He is a materials scientist and his research interests lie in Biomedical and related areas such as Tissue Engineering and Wound Healing. Besides, he is also intrigued to work in other areas such as Food Packaging materials. He has published more than 20 research articles and book chapters and has more than 550 citations on his name with an h-index of 12. Dr Purohit is also a reputed reviewer for several peer-reviewed international journals and working as an Academic Editor for IET Nanobiotechnology and Scientifica-Hindawi. He is also involved in the editing of a few special issues in SCIE Journals. In addition, He is involved in the editing of a book titled “Functional Smart Nanomaterials and Their Theranostics Approaches” for Springer Nature.

Sang Hyun Park

Sang Hyun Park is currently working for Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute as a researcher and University of Science and Technology as a professor in South Korea. He received Ph.D. degree from the Department of Chemistry, Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ, USA in 1996. He worked for Ohsung Chemical Co., Ltd. (1997-1998) and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (1999-2001). His current research interests are focused on the fields of chemical sensors, biosensors, and drug delivery.

Sung Soo Han

Sung Soo Han is a Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering, Yeungnam University (YU) in Gyeongsan, South Korea. He received his Ph.D., MS, and BS degrees from the Department of Polymer and Textile Engineering, Seoul National University (SNU), Seoul, South Korea. He has published various research and review articles in internationally reputed journals. His research interests are focused on biomaterials, nanomaterials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, cancer therapy, bioprocess engineering, and artificial meat culture.
