Genetic Parameter Estimates for Five Traits in Male Hop Accessions: A Preliminary Study

Abstract

Much information on hop (Humulus lupulus) production and maintenance exists but little is known about the genetics of specific traits. The objective of this study was to determine general combining ability (GCA) and genetic correlations (rg) for five traits in six male hop accessions crossed to 14 different female accessions. Data for the study were extracted from USDA hop breeding records covering the past 25 years. The analysis was performed with females nested within males across four replicates (years). We observed significant (P ≤ 0.05) GCA for all traits, with male 21361M exhibiting the highest GCA for yield (paternal half-sib avg. = 1,934 kg/ha); 21268M exhibiting the highest GCA for α-acid levels (paternal half-sib avg. = 7.20%), 19046M exhibiting the highest GCA for β-acid levels (paternal half-sib avg. = 6.54%), 64035M exhibiting the most desirable cohumulone (COH) levels relative to total α-acids (paternal half-sib avg. = 24.1%), and 64037M exhibiting the most desirable value for hop storage index (HSI) (paternal half-sib avg. = 0.246). Significant positive genetic correlations were observed between COH and yield (0.492) and between COH and HSI (0.763). Significant negative genetic correlations were observed between α-acid and β-acid levels (–0.743) and β-acid levels and HSI (–0.788). The results of this study, while preliminary, provide valuable information for hop breeders on choice of males for specific traits and a selection protocol guide for multiple trait selection.

Resumen

Existe mucha información sobre producción y conservación de Lúpulo (Humulus lupulus) pero poco se conoce sobre las características genéticas especificas. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la capacidad de combinación general (GCA) y correlaciones genéticas (rg.) para cinco características en seis Lúpulos masculinos registrados cruzados con 14 registros femeninos diferentes. La información para el estudio fue obtenida de los registros de la USDA de reproducción de Lúpulo de los últimos 25 años. Los análisis fueron realizados con producciones femeninas dentro de masculinas a través de 4 réplicas (años). Observamos GCA significativo (P ≤ 0.05) para todas las caracteristicas con el masculino 21361M mostrando el alto GCA para rendimiento (paterno 1/2 hermano promedio = 1,934 kg/ha); 21268M el mas alto GCA para niveles α-acido (paterno 1/2 hermano promedio = 7.20%), 19046M el más alto GCA para niveles β-ácido (paterno 1/2 hermano promedio = 6.54%), 64035M el nivel más deseable de cohumulona (COH) relativo al total de α-ácidos (paterno 1/2 hermano promedio = 24.1%), y 64037M el valor más deseable para indice de almacenaje de Lúpulo (HSI) (paterno 1/2 hermano promedio = 0.246). Una correlación genetica positiva significativa fue observada entre COH y rendimiento (0.492) y entre COH y HSI (0.763). Una correlación genética significativa fue observada entre niveles α-ácido y β-ácido (–0.743) y niveles β-ácido y HSI (–0.788). Los resultados de este estudio, aunque preliminares, proporcionan valiosa informacion para productores de Lúpulo para seleccionar caracteristicas específicas masculinas y un método de registro de seleccion para selección de características múltiples.
