Abstract

The reading skills of students in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) to make causal inferences of emotional content are analysed in the present study. The objective was to verify if the activation of the protagonists' emotional states in a narrative text is mediated by the reading level of the individuals. Forty- five students aged between 12- and 16-years were classified into three levels in terms of their reading skill. Subsequently they had to read a series of short stories using a self-paced reading technique. Results confirm the previous hypothesis that the activation of the emotional states of the protagonists of the stories was mediated by the reading level of the students‥
