Abstract

The question of using a second language to teach mathematics is addressed in the paper. The research approach is based on educational system theory promoted by Brousseau, and of generalised use in the French field of educational research. Our aim is to investigate if linguistic obstacles that emerge during the mathematics activity are treated, and if so how this is done. The classroom interaction analyses have a double perspective: mathematics and second language. The results show that when the teacher focuses on language aspects the target is the mathematics project.
